Rules

Cagewise is played on a 4 × 4, 5 × 5 or 6 × 6 grid: each digit from 1 to the size of the grid appears once per row and once per column. Thick lines cut the grid into cages; the number and the sign of a cage give the result of its digits: their sum (+), their product (×), and for a cage of two cells their difference (−) or their quotient (÷), the larger first. A digit may repeat in a cage if it is neither on the same row nor on the same column. Each grid has a single solution, found by logic.

  • The daily challenge: one grid per size, the same for everyone, renewed at midnight (Paris time). Only your first try of the day is ranked; the next ones are practice.
  • The free run: a new grid every game, as many games as you like; your best time of the day counts.
  • The clock starts when the grid appears and does not stop, even if you leave the page. It stops when the grid you send is right; a wrong grid only costs time.
  • Week: each day, your rank in the daily challenge gives points (25 for the first, then 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1, and 1 point for every other ranked player).
  • With a keyboard: the digits, the arrows to move, Delete to erase. A digit twice in a row or a column is marked.

Cagewise: the rules in brief

Fill the grid so that each digit appears once per row and per column, and every cage gives its result with its operation (+, −, ×, ÷). Three sizes, from 4 × 4 to 6 × 6; the grid of the day is the same for everyone and has a single solution.

Cagewise: how to get better

  • Start with the one-cell cages: their digit is given.
  • For a × cage, look for the divisors of the result; for a − or ÷ cage, the possible pairs.
